The Thinking Shop, an initiative by the School of Thought, despite its commercial name, not only sells, but also allows one to download excellent critical thinking and logical fallacies cards and posters absolutely for free!
They come to the rescue when you feel your students need a leg up with forming logical arguments, clear reasoning without cognitive bias, and polishing the art of civil conversation.
You can find all the wonderful materials here:
The free resources (below the ones on sale:)
How do I use them?
- I printed, laminted and cut the cards as well as the posters
- I divide the class in groups of 5-6 students, and give them a deck /part of the deck of logical fallacies or cognitive bias cards and the poster that presents all of them
- each groups first studies the list on the posters and shares which of the phenomena are the most common, the most hurtful (why and how?) and the most ‘useful’ (in what why? )
- having come to an agreement, they prepare a list of their choices-as many as they are to be presented to the other groups at the end of the class, taking turns to eat explain their choices and the phenomena behind the name
- then the students are dealt eg 3-4 cards each and take turns to describe a situation they are likely to encounter, and one that illustrates how the problem on their cards works- the rest of the group tries to guess which cognitive bias/logical fallacy has just been described. They look at the poster to constantly remind themselves of the list.
- after each student has described at least two cards, they give their group presentation that they prepared beforehand
Enjoy!
