It is a pleasure to watch students engage in ‚ME-based’ projects, where they can build on and share their own passions, views and experiences.
One of such projects that is a huge hit is a series of activities based on the assumption that one day a book is written about you:) It could be a novel, a biography, a poetry compilation- you name it!
step one- introduce the idea of the blurb, ask students to find books with really good blurbs and discuss their structure, purpose and effectiveness
step two- the students to imagine a book is written about them. Ask them to design a blurb for it, but assume a different name.
step three- collect the blurbs and post them on padlet/ wakelet etc, where students can add likes and comments. as well as other multimedia content.
step four- ask students to read all the blurbs and engage with them with likes and comments, then encourage them to share which of the books they would be most interesting in reading and why.
step five- students choose/ are assigned a blurb and are supposed to record a (flipgrid) video reviewing the book whose blurb they read. They need to imagine the plot, provide its summary and recommend the book to others. The video is then posted under the blurb, eg on wakelet
Extra! extra!- students are encouraged to invent the title and design the book cover which they will use into video
Enjoy!
